随着中国解放，江南某城喜红楼的一群烟花女子被送去劳教营。秋仪和小萼是一对好姐妹，中途秋仪逃跑，小萼则留在劳动营里。无处可去的秋仪来到旧相好老浦家。浦少爷不务正业，整天与秋仪混在一起，遭到浦老太太的不满，秋仪无奈离去。几经周折，秋仪万念俱灰到尼姑庵出了家。土地改革后，老浦也结束了少爷生活，到工厂当了会计。小萼从劳教营出来，替代了秋仪和老浦相好，两人结为夫妻。 秋仪发现自己怀了老蒲的孩子，只好又还了俗，在老蒲和小萼的婚礼上送给他们一把伞。婚后，恶习不改的小萼好吃懒做、挥霍无度，只凭工资吃饭的老蒲养不起她，便去贪污分款，事情暴露老浦因犯贪污罪被枪决。秋仪来到老浦家，两个女人言归于好，小萼痛哭说是自己害了他。秋仪生下老蒲的孩子，但是没有活成，从此也不能生养了，她想领养老蒲和小萼的儿子，但小萼舍不得。守了一年寡，小萼再也熬不下去了，她把孩子托给秋仪，跟一个北方人走了，从此没有了音讯。秋仪则心满意足地当起了孩子的母亲。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
