1950年代，某城市。洪磊光（舒适 饰）教授与黄蔚文（项堃 饰）都是微生物学家，二人还是多年的好友，在最近共同期研制开发抵抗302病菌新药时，双方却产生很大分歧。洪磊光工作中雷厉风行，大胆启用青年知识分子，鼓励年青人凡事创新，而黄蔚文则墨守成规，凡事亲历亲为，连助手都不能大胆使用。洪磊光认为，即是联合研发，尽量不去打消黄的工作情绪，有时从大局考虑他还主动向黄示好。但敏感的黄蔚文并不领情，在一次会上听到身为所长的洪磊光批评保守主义思想，黄愤然提出辞职。洪磊光仍夜以继日的工作，因劳累过度，他昏倒在实验室内，不幸被病菌感染，闻迅后的黄蔚文悔不当初，接手了未尽的研发任务，那么感染病菌的洪磊光能救过来吗......。The second series, Ben Harper, husband and father to three different and often difficult children has spent his working life as a dentist.
