江户时代某町，一下级武士不满上级食言，遂挥刀砍死长官，引起一片混乱。事后，中年武士中村主水（藤田まこと 饰）成为代罪羔羊，遭到降职减薪处罚。不久，年轻俊美的长官奥田右京亮（真田広之 饰）走马上任。与此同时，一群落魄浪人组成的团伙对当地百姓居住地进行大肆骚扰，混乱之中，一老者不幸身亡。偶然闲荡于此的主水事感蹊跷，暗中展开调查。而老者的女儿为给父亲报仇，不惜出卖身体赚钱聘请能杀掉浪人的勇者。在此期间，主水结识了带着两个孩子的浪人文七（千葉真一 饰）。两人不打不相识，主水拜托文七调查右京亮的出身，结果发现这个新任长官和浪人集团有着千丝万缕的联系。 背后的阴谋由此渐渐浮出水面……。In a sleepy southern town, the Larkin family suffers a terrible tragedy.
