早川直吉家族在东京郊区的新开市开设了一家名为“早川”的鳗鱼串烧店。大女儿菊子嫁给了当地一家电力公司的工薪族中原勇，长子繁吉和二女儿久美子给这家店帮忙。菊子夫妇因调职来到东京。在苦苦寻找出租房后，与失去妻子的丈夫同事竹村住在一起。。One day, thinking that it will make your wife and friends smile, you shave off the moustache that you have had for the last ten years. Viewers who like their conclusions tidy may rebel, but those who relish outstanding performances in the service of an intriguing idea will be entertained.
