梅蝶纹是疯人院的医生，却意外被病人杀死。梅蝶纹的丈夫袁邵认为妻子死得蹊跷，于是装疯进入疯人院调查。袁邵来到不久，医生吴远就辞职了，袁邵出院找到了吴远，吴远求袁邵放过自己，并且暗示疯人院院长梅尔教授有问题。袁邵不顾女儿的反对，又回到了疯人院，发现了梅尔教授用活人做实验的秘密……梅尔不再手软，用尽了方法将袁邵逼疯。但袁邵并没有真疯，为救护士长符珍，袁邵却暴露了自己，符珍被袁邵感动，放了袁邵。袁邵带领警察冲入了疯人院，但梅尔早有准备，警察们扑了个空。梅尔再次扣下袁邵，就在梅尔要用袁邵做实验的关键时刻，天降神兵，另一个潜伏在疯人院装疯的警察路医生救了袁邵，小强。也揭开了疯人院的秘密。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
